Welcome to the Washco Dems!

We are Democrats for a working democracy.

The purpose of the Washington County Democratic Central Committee is
to help qualified Democrats get elected to public office.

We encourage Democrats to run for public office and to apply for
appointments to serve on local boards and commissions.

Likely Ballot Measures for 2008

This year  we can expect as many as 13 regressive ballot measures sponsored by Bill Sizemore, Kevin Mannix, and friends for the November election.

Over the coming months, we will be debating these issues and the Washington County Dems will vote to support, stay neutral or oppose each of these measures.

Please review the attached document as we may be debating one or more of these ballot measure endorsements in June.

Keep our Washington County Skies Blue--

Join the Blue Horizon Sustaining Fund!

It’s another election year with 2008 promising to be every bit as exciting as 2006. Key to our success is keeping the headquarters open and running smoothly.

Please consider joining the Blue Horizon Sustaining Fund—or if you are currently a member, give thought to increasing your monthly donation—even $5/month more can make a huge difference.
(Click here to sign up now!)

We have a chance to pick up at least one open house seat in Washington County (HD26) while waging critical battles to keep existing seats in HD29, HD30 and HD35. Not to mention the chance of a lifetime to defeat Gordon Smith (and have two Democratic Senators!), plus important statewide office seats to retain. And of course, the U.S. Presidency at stake!

We need your help to offset the off-election year attrition in our membership that occurred last year and the rent increase that came with signing the new 3-year lease. Think about who you know who should be a member and pass along their contact information to Karen Packer at finance@washcodems.org. We really appreciate your past contributions to the Washington County Democrats and hope we can count on your continued support.

On to Victory in 2008!

Ballot Deadline Looms - Postal Rates Rising

Ballots not in the mail by Friday May 16 may not be delivered in time! They should be hand delivered to the Elections Office.
In Washington County, the election office is located at 3700 SW Murray Bl in Beaverton, 1000 yds north of TV Hwy. Ballots can be dropped off at any time day or night until 8PM Tuesday May 20th.
Beginning May 12th, postal rates will increase from 41 cents to 42 cents for a one ounce first-class letter.
County Elections offices have announced that any ballots that are mailed with 41 cent stamps will be delivered, and the State will pay any postage due. Voters who have not yet mailed their ballots should try to use the new 42 cent stamps or "forever" stamps that are good for any one ounce letters, but if only 41 cent stamps are available they will be delivered.

Legislators Sponsor College Costs Clinic For Parents

May 19 2008 - 6:30pm

Oregon Sen. Mark Hass is holding a clinic to help parents and future college students learn more about Oregon’s 529 College Savings Plan.

The event will feature Michael Parker from the Oregon Department of Treasury. He will provide parents with useful information about the Oregon College Savings Plan as well as other tools that enable parents to plan for their kids’ higher education.

If You Get Two Ballots

If voters changed their party registration in the last 2 weeks or so, they may receive a ballot for the previous registration. This is because the ballots were already printed and ready to mail before they changed their registration.

These voters will receive ANOTHER ballot in a week or so, for their new registration.

Voters should NOT send in the first ballot, with the wrong registration. They should wait for the second, correct ballot before voting.

Update: The Secretary Of State said this:

What happens if a voter casts the ballot that has their old registration?

The state's centralized database will catch the error automatically (the ballot envelope bar code contains the voter's ID and ballot style), and that ballot will not be processed. Instead, it will be set aside until all other ballots are processed.

If the second updated ballot is cast only that one will be counted, and the old one will not be counted. If the voter sends in only the out-of-date ballot only their votes in non-partisan contests will be counted.

Again, under any circumstance only one ballot will be counted per voter.
