This Saturday, August 9th, the WashCo Dems will be supporting crawfish and democracy at the 2008 Tualatin Crawfish Festival. Come walk with us in the parade, or help out at our booth.

Parade walkers should meet us on Saturday at 9:00 AM on the EAST side of the Tualatin KMart parking lot. Help us support our candidates and spread goodwill (candy!) to the good people and crawfish supporters of Tualatin.

Walking with my house district candidate

I walked a neighborhood tonight with Jessica Adamson, my state house district democratic candidate. Its something that I recommend that everybody do. Some times there are group canvassing events available, but you can also call and arrange an evening canvass with the candidates.

The candidates are out walking anyway and they appreciate the compnay and help. Direct voter contact is alos the single most effective thing you can do. Its also a great way to learn about campaigns by asking the candidate questions. No one knows more about running campaigns than the candidates who are in the middle of it.

They give you a short script and have you pass out the canpaign lit, ask for their vote amd mark down the response. Its really a simple thing to do. I especially like helping the state house candidates because the race is small enough where I feel I can help make a difference.

I am going to do one a week with Jessica, I'll report back on how it goes.

Have you ever noticed that the authors of the US Constitution capitalized certain key words in its Preample?

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Note that "defence" (defense) is NOT capitalized, while People, Union, Justice, Tranquility, Welfare, Blessings (of) Liberty, Posterity (succeeding or future generations collectively), and Constitution ARE capitalized.

What's a "rhyzome"?!?

Hi everybody! My name is Ron Morgan and I am the Field Organizer for the Washington County Democrats. You may notice that my handle (my internet ID) and the title of this blog, is "rhyzome". What in tarnation is a "rhyzome"?

When I first got online back in the Pliestoscene era (i.e. 1993) I wanted a nickname that encompassed both my personality and how I would relate to the new network technological topology. So I tried to use "rhizome", which is:

"In botany, a rhizome is a horizontal stem of a plant that is usually found underground, often sending out roots and shoots from its nodes." [wikipedia]

We all know rhizomes, crabgrass is a rhizome, ginger is a rhizome... structures that grow horizontally and then send shoots up all over the place. Unfortunately someone with a quicker trigger finger than I had already glommed up the name (probably a philosophy major at Columbia...), so I used a urban variation, "rhyzome", when I signed up on the Well for my first email address.

As your Field Organizer, I'm part of a huge rhizome, the Washington County Democrats. Our roots stretch from Tualatin to Forest Grove, from the Portland city limits to North Plains... My job is to encourage more shoots to pop up until we have a lush carpet of Democrats covering the county.
